Stellenbosch University Student Leaders Conference

MySense is presenting a workshop at the annual Stellenbosch University Student Leaders Conference on 13th September 2013.

Sensory Profile Insights explain why we may feel energised or overwhelmed by everyday situations. Find your personal survival strategies as a student leader – each of us has an individual sensory tolerance for the way we respond and behave.  This affects how we manage our own deadlines and achievements, as well as how we coach other students in dealing with stress.

Some of us are disturbed by change; irritated by sounds, smells, textures; and avoid big noisy venues, while others love the rush and diversity of daily life – perhaps taking on more and more? We experience life though our senses responding to movement, sounds, touch, smell, taste, and visual information, but our enjoyment of sensations is different for each of us.

Within your role as mentor or team leader

  • Recognise how sensory tolerances affect individual performance and team dynamics; Sensory overload can negatively influence working relationships as well as reduce team productivity
  • Allocate tasks more selectively – be aware of timing and scheduling of tasks, and actively control environmental stress for the best outcome
  • Change contexts: Modern companies recognise how sensation plays a role in modulating our alertness and focus. Use university facilities such as gym, sport, outdoor centres, dance and recreational facilities to reach the ‘just right’ level of focus and alertness; build in movement breaks and transition between tasks to reach optimum productivity; and design your own work space to allow for your own tolerances

Register for the Sensory Profile Insights workshop to understand your own sensory tolerances, and to guide others in managing stressors.
